Comics: Secret Identities: An Asian American Super Hero Anthology

This week UC Davis is celebrating API (Asian Pacific Islander) week with a bunch of programs, concerts, performances, and discussions about issues that affect the Asian American community. One of these happened to be a panel of sorts with actor Parry Shen (Better Luck Tomorrow) on his new comic book anthology, Secret Identities.

I've been looking at the anthology for a while now, but I never actually purchased it yet. But I do have it in my hands now, and I have to say that it's a pretty impressive collection of works from a widely diverse group of Asian Americans. They were able to get some great professionals in the industry including Greg Pak (Magneto's Testament), Dustin Nguyen (Detective Comics), and Gene Yang (American Born Chinese) just to name a few.

Personally, I feel that this is a step in a great direction. Whenever I look at the Wizard Top 10 writers and artists, I'm always a bit stunned to see that on the writer's side there's 10 old white guys (minus Greg Pak) while on the artist side, it's an ethnically diverse group of people. And when you look at the list of super heroes, the list of Asian/Asian American superheroes is slim to none.

This anthology is a move in the right direction toward awareness. I just hope that everyone who reads this blog will go and get the book and show some friends while you're at it.

Ignorance is not bliss.
