Movies: The Geek will inherit the Earth?

Sunday, May 10, 2009 Posted by Unknown , , , , , No comments
If you haven't looked at IMDB or rottentomatoes recently, then here are the BIG summer movies coming out in May:

May 1st: X-Men Origins: Wolverine
May 8th: Star Trek
May 15th: Angels and Demons
May 22nd: Terminator Salvation
May 29th: Up

Obviously, these five movies are being hyped individually, but if you compare them to each other, four of the five can be considered "nerd or geek" movies. I won't consider Up a nerd movie since its a Pixar film and everyone loves them; however, the other four go something like this:
1)X-Men- Comic Book Film
2)Star Trek- Trekkie Film
3)Angels and Demons- Book/Art/Science Film
4)Terminator- Sci-fi/Comic action film

I'm not going to commentate on what those adjectives hint at about the future of cinema and mainstream culture because I know I don't have to. Someone else has already:
The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth

And for kicks, a quote from my favorite author (taken from the above article):
"When I started doing Sandman, I could look at a group of people lined up to get my autograph, and I knew who was my fan and who was somebody's mum there to get a signature. It doesn't work that way anymore. They're people. They're us. That's what they look like." -Neil Gaiman
